In this video, I break down parts of the Common “The Light” beat juggle using Notorious B.I.G.’s “10 Crack Commandments” to explain some of the basics between the beat counts and timing for basic beat juggling.

I love this genre.  This mix has some of my favorites.  Most of them are old, but I love the jazzy-funk-disco-R&B-type vibe.  There aren’t too many vocals on this mix, so you can put this on as background music when your friends come over to play Yahtzee.

Tracklisting after the break.  I think there’s only 1 expletive within the first 30 seconds?

Just recorded a video testing out ustream.tv while practicing playing all sorts of randomness as usual.  In my pajamas of course. The video quality is awful and the audio skips, but the track selection is nice.

This set is the usual randomness I play at Adidas. Shout out to Arjun who put me on to the Madcon track before everyone else.  Full 4 hour set mixed live by Dave. Mostly clean lyrics.  Tracklisting after the break.

I was trying to learn some new beat juggle patterns and figured I’d record it for reference.  This video was really just for me so I wouldn’t forget some of the things I was practicing.  Instead of keeping it for my eyes only, I figured I’d make the video public for everyone to see.  Even if there are mistakes and repetitive parts, maybe someone else can get something out of it?  I wish I had resources like YouTube when I was learning to DJ.  Like all the originators I learned things the hard way – on crappy equipment.

I still trip out to the amount of feedback I got from this video.  The story behind this one is that I was just going through some tracks I threw in a crate real quick.  I was already mixing for a while when I thought to myself “this is a dope set.”  Looked up, saw the camera, hit record in mid set.  So what you’re seeing is just me practicing stuff like I normally do on any other day.

Back then, you could have caught me on http://stickam.com/serato playing whatever at any given time.  I’m sure there are plenty of videos of me out there somewhere.  Unfortunately, stickam’s website is horrible, so I’m not really motivated to find them all.

A few of us were in the Vestax room at Remix Hotel debating if you could beat juggle on the VCI-300.  Someone brought up the infamous juggle Shortkut did with Art of Noise’s Beat Box.  Things got interesting, so the guys at Serato wanted to record it.  There weren’t many videos of real hip-hop DJs using this kind of gear at the time, so to me this was a good move.  I asked them to credit Shortkut on the video, but I guess that detail got overlooked.  In hindsight, I would have done another song or something more original.  Instead we just repeated what we had been practicing for the past 5-10 mins.

These are pieces of the mix from Aaron’s party. As usual, lots of 90s hip hop and stuff from that era.  There aren’t any drops on this mix, so if you decide to download it or share it, please include where you got it from.

Mixed live by Dave using the VCI-300.  Explicit lyrics.
