We gotta thank the homie Josh from Instant Club Hit who hooked this one up years ago.  This edition of Throwback Thursday brings us a recording of Baltimore’s own DJ Spen mixing on 92Q the night of New Years Eve ’93.  DJ Spen is a legend.  He’s been a major staple in the music community for a very long time.  I wouldn’t do him justice by attempting to list his feats and accomplishments, so I’ll send you directly to his website instead.

This is straight up soulful house on 92Q.  As you’ll see with this post and more to come in the next upcoming weeks, radio in Baltimore was amazing.  I would love to hear them get away with playing stuff like this today.  They still play Baltimore club music, but 92Q and V103 used to play everything from hip hop to house to rave music.  I miss it.  Clear Channel sucks.

It’s Mixtape Monday, so I’m here to drop off a jem that was sent to me years ago.  Classic Baltimore club/house mixtapes are hard to come by nowadays.  These tapes are special, because they can easily show how some of the creators of the Baltimore sound architected the music and moved the dance floors of that era.  I’m not sure what the year of this tape is, but if I had to guess I would say ’93.

I can’t remember if it was Steve PMX or one of the guys from the Scatterblog that blessed me with this or not, but either way props to them both.  I noticed a few people were looking for Sean Marshall tapes, so hopefully this will give them a little piece of that early 90′s Baltimore house history they were looking for.

The sound quality is pretty awful, but it was recorded from a cassette tape from the 90′s.  It’s 2012.  Get over it.  Plus, it was probably a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy.  So, yeah.  Enjoy.

Here’s my set from a compilation CD made for Adidas a while back (circa 2007).  It’s compiled of all the original breaks (samples) that were used to make lots of songs that became classics.  There are about 50+ breaks played in a little over 10 minutes.  Some rare, some not.

See if you can recognize the songs that sampled these breaks.  Or if you’re really good, see if you can name the breaks!  I’m not posting a track listing, because any self-respecting digger would never reveal the names on a mix like this.  Don’t even try to Shazam it.. I move too fast on this one.

B-Rock and I played this past weekend at Sarafino’s.  This mix was done after most of the crowd left at the end of the night.  Give me free range behind the decks and this is what will happen.

I would never play like this in front of a “normal” crowd.  Some people are quick to dismiss music they’re not familiar with.  I’m not one of those people. This mix reflects that perfectly.  If you like this mix, we’re cool.

Cian Noteman is here to kick off a new segment I want to keep going for a while called Throwback Thursdays.  Here, we plan to feature old mixes from the archive or new mixes with old tracks.

This mix is full of classic songs plus some of my personal favorites that don’t get much play.  When I tune into Backspin on Sirius, this is what I expect to hear.  Don’t even get me started on radio… local or satellite… they can all suck it.  I don’t need to sell you on this mix, just look at the track listing.

This is the raw set recording of the mix I did for this week’s Strictly Hip Hop show on WEAA 88.9 FM in Baltimore.  Tune in to listen live via web broadcast or via FM radio like the old folks used to do.

The show airs 12AM to 5AM on Saturday, which is Friday night for me.  I don’t consider it Saturday until the sun comes up.. or when Taco Bell closes.

Here’s another house mix by Sasha that she did about a year ago.  These are some of her favorite songs she used to play a lot.  Lots of soulful lounge-y vocal house.

Live recording from the broadcast on Strictly Hip Hop. Some callers wanted to hear Jay-Z, so I played a few tracks you usually don’t hear (which is what you’re SUPPOSED to do as a DJ).

Tune into Strictly Hip Hop on WEAA 88.9 Friday nights into Saturday morning from 12 AM to 5 AM.

Lots of funky old school hip hop cuts and a few other jams.  Some mainstream, some songs you might not hear everyday. Happy Birthday shout-out to Aaron!

This 3 hour mix is cut up into 3 CD-friendly 70 minute MP3s.  Enjoy.
