I like this mix a lot. I’m curious to see what others’ interpretation of this piece of art is, given the project’s uniqueness. I’ll be keeping an eye on the comments at Head of Rothchild. As a matter of fact, go there now to read Stoop Girl’s breakdown of what this movement is all about it and listen/download the mix down below.

<itunes:summary>This set of mixes was broadcasted on the Strictly Hip-Hop radio show on WEAA last week. The theme for the show was all about original samples, so these mixes have original tracks and the songs which sampled them.
I really got into finding samples after listening to Paul Nice’s “Soul on the Grill” mix CD. That mix was so smooth and flowed so nicely, I became an instant fan. I started to grow tired of the state of hip hop at the time, but I couldn’t stop buying records. I couldn’t stop DJing. Digging for classics and original samples became an obsession which brought new life to my world of DJing.
Like most things, once people became accustomed to hearing me play original samples (and sort of expecting it), I stopped. For some reason, that feeling bothers me and I subconsciously start playing something different. The Adidas Breaks Mix was the last official recorded “breakstravaganza” I put out. Anything else after that was always just a sprinkle or two of breaks mixed in with other stuff. So enjoy this, ’cause you probably won’t get me to do these type of mixes dedicated to samples for a while.</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:summary>
Like most DJs, I bought a lot of records from Turntable Lab. I remember when they first started selling records – they would only stock GOOD music. Stuff that was hand-picked and not your everyday radio or record pool wax. The guys who reviewed the music there were all top notch DJs or music lovers. The reviews were funny, personal and informative. Recently I found a receipt from Turntable Lab stuck at the bottom of one of my crates. The amount of money we spent on vinyl was insane! And to think, we would buy 2 copies of every single we wanted to play out and if the album was really good, we’d also buy the CD to play in the car. Insane. I know a lot of DJs are strictly digital now with the introduction of Serato ScratchLIVE, but some of us still buy records. Some tracks are not sold digitally or are too old and obscure to find online. So, you have no choice but to buy the record. I miss the feeling of getting a new stack of vinyl and playing it at full volume at a club for the first time. Real DJs know what I’m talking about. I don’t miss all the money spent on wax though. $15 for an import or a record that only has 1 song on it that you MUST play. Nah, I don’t miss those days at all.
One nice thing about ordering from Turntable Lab is that they would put random gifts in with your order. Most of the time they were stickers. Cool ones too, like something from Mike Tyson’s Punch Out or whatever. One day I got a CD in with my order. Having no idea what it was, I carried it along with me on my travels and shared it with Cian Noteman. Turns out it was a mix CD by these guys from Southern California. It’s a real chill down-tempo type of mix, perfect for those times you just wanna relax or you want something to calm you from getting road rage while you’re driving. If you listen to Chill on Sirius XM or like music from DJ Shadow, you should like this mix. Being that Uncle Jesse will be heading down to play at Miami Music Week in a few days, I had to post this up. The Noteman and I traveled a lot when this was released, so it’s only right that we get this out so others can hear it.
From what I’ve read on the net, this CD was limited to 1000 copies and there’s hardly any info on it anywhere. I found 2 reviews here and here, plus a broken link to buy the CD on their MySpace page. I hope you all enjoy it as it’s been in the stash for quite some time now (since 2001). The mix is split up into multiple parts, most likely with each part showcased by each DJ: Urthworm, MaortaPlain, noMSG and Delirius.

<itunes:summary>KW Griff is legendary in my book. I had a few records given to me before I started DJing, but the first record I ever bought with my own money I made from my job was a Dew Doo Kidz record. DJ Booman and KW Griff make up the legendary Unruly production team Dew Doo Kidz. They produced (or co-produced) many of the classic Baltimore club songs that still get played today.
You can still catch KW on 92Q (WERQ 92.3 FM) Friday nights as well as WWIN (95.9) Saturday nights spinning deep old school classics. I hardly ever listen to the radio, but if I ever catch KW on air it’s hard for me to turn it off.
This mix has a few really good club records from that era. This is from 1997.. it was like the golden era of Baltimore club music! Pick ‘Em Up is a classic. That record came out earlier that year. I’ll never forget it, because DJ Class let me hold all those Unruly promos before they came out so I could make a club tape. I made that tape and he sold it at his store for a while under the name DJ Aztek (don’t judge me). I also remember finishing it up right before we took a school trip for FBLA. At that conference, we threw a party in our room and had that tape blasting with kids from all over Maryland dancing to Baltimore club music. Good times.
Thanks to Josh and the crew from instantclubhit.com for this one!

<itunes:summary>I was so focused. This edition of Mixtape Monday features a mix I did back in 2003. After listening to this mix again for the first time in years, I’m impressed by the non-stop blends in and out of various parts of these songs – especially when back then some DJs were putting out “mixtapes” that didn’t have ANY actual mixing on them. That still confuses me.
This is a typical Hip-Hop and R&B promo mix which was given out at whatever club I was at and at random parties. I hit a little bit of everything from that period in time. A little bit of breaks, Hip-Hop, some classics, sprinkled in a little reggae, smoothed it out for the ladies a few times, plus some local talent from Baltimore. This was before Serato, so this was done using all vinyl with some serious multi-tracking.
Take a listen and go back in time almost 10 years, which probably makes this mix the current generation’s “old school?” Some songs turned out to be certified classics which are still played today. Another key point is the era of this mix was just before Hip-Hop took a nose-dive into the 80 BPM range and started to suck. Enjoy.

<itunes:summary>Steve PMX and his co-worker Nate brings you a cassette recording from the early 90′s of Frank Ski on V103. This all went down many years ago, but somehow I crossed paths with this dude Steve PMX. He had a co-worker (Nate) who used to record A LOT of tapes back in the day. Unlike most of us, he still had some of those tapes! I posted these tapes up years ago back when Steve got them to me, but I re-designed the site about 7 times since then and the links got lost. I dug up the recordings and this time, they’re staying up for good. I promise.
This is a real piece of history here. Frank goes from what we considered “Baltimore Club” at the time to hip hop, then back to club. Back then I couldn’t tell what was from Baltimore and what wasn’t. Now I know those records were a mixture of Hip Hop, Hip House, House House and Rave music imported from the UK. These records came from everywhere.. Baltimore, New York, Chicago, Detroit… you name it. If it had a beat that people could dance to, they played it. Some songs we played had little to no words in it, or the DJs cut it up before the words would even start. People got hyped off of just the beats. I love it.
I was too young to be in the clubs during this era, so I kept my ears glued to the radio at all times. What you hear was pretty typical of what Frank would play. Aside from this, my own personal exposure to this music was also when I would go bowling with my grandparents. Sounds wack, right? NO! Whoever the DJ was at the bowling alley in Security on Saturday nights during the early 90′s… I owe you one. All the deep house, imports, garage house and explicit club tracks that got played in the clubs was played there. It was basically a nightclub at a bowling alley. It made for awkward times when I was hearing Sweet P*ssy Pauline in front of my grandmother, but it exposed me to the songs I couldn’t hear on the radio and it’s something I’m glad I experienced as a DJ. None the less, this mix is still great to hear after all these years.
Enjoy.

Digging through the archives I found this gem by the one and only Cian Noteman. There are a lot of things I like about this mix. First off, the intro is hilarious. The day we recorded that was probably the hardest I’d ever laughed. Porkchop is a really funny dude. He’s also a real dope MC and a pretty good DJ too. Another thing I like about this is how heavy The Noteman goes in on the R&B. Most of these songs weren’t getting any spins at the time and a few of them were new or underground. He’s always had a keen ear to good music, but you can tell R&B is like that elementary school crush to this DJ.
Production is excellent, track selection is dope and it was on steady rotation throughout the city when he put it out. This is an excellent mix and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mix of Hip Hop and R&B plus a couple old school treats.
Explicit Lyrics.
